I got a degree in English, which got me familiar with academic styles. But then my first day job was editing government technical manuals. Mostly it was experience with different kinds of content. I know they have technical editor certifications. If you want to focus on academic editing, you'll want to be an expert in MS Word, APA, MLA, and Chicago style. There are other styles too of course, but they're less common and you can get by with online reference guides
